Swimming With(out) Floaties

August 22, 2024

At Aqua-Tots, we understand the appeal of flotation devices for children, but we want to emphasize that true swimming skills happen without floaties. While these toys may seem like helpful tools for young swimmers, they hinder essential skill development and can create a dangerous dependency.

Why Flotation Devices Fall Short
  • False Sense of Security: Flotation devices can give children and parents a false sense of security. Children may feel empowered in their ability to float and may not learn to properly respect the water and safe boundaries. Also, parents may learn to depend on flotation devices which minimizes the urgency to keep a close eye on swimmers.
  • Improper Positioning: Flotation devices place children in a vertical position, which counters the horizontal position of safe swimming. Learning to find air, roll onto the back and float are just a few of the skills children need to learn to save their lives...and these skills are done horizontally.
  • Safety Concern: In real-life situations, such as falling into water unexpectedly, children need to rely on their swimming abilities, not flotation aids. Teaching them to swim without these devices prepares them for such scenarios.

How You Can Support Your Child
As a parent, your support is crucial in helping your child transition from flotation devices to independent swimming. Here are some tips:

  • Encourage Practice: Spend time together in the pool—without flotation devices—practicing skills learned during lessons.
  • Stay Positive: Celebrate small victories and progress, reinforcing your child’s confidence and enthusiasm for swimming.
  • Remain Consistent: Consistency is key when learning to swim! Attend lessons year-round and remain steadfast in your resolve to avoid flotation devices. Consistency will help you reach your swimming goals.
  • Be Patient: Understand that this transition may take time, and it's important to be patient and encouraging throughout the process.

When Flotation Devices Are Ok
While we are adamant that children learn to swim independently, there are a few instances when U.S. Coast Guard approved life vests are appropriate and recommended. These devices are designed to keep the wearer afloat and keep airways clear of water if the wearer becomes unconscious or injured.

  • Swimming in Open Water: This includes rivers, lakes, oceans, and any body of water where a current could be present.
  • Riding or Operating a Watercraft: Wear approved life jackets at all times when boating, sailing, skiing, tubing, etc.
At Aqua-Tots, we are committed to teaching children to swim independently. If you have any questions or need further guidance, please reach out. Together, we can help your child achieve swimming success without the need for flotation devices.
