6 Signs It’s Time for Swim Lessons

By Aqua-Tots Swim School Sarasota January 31, 2025

When it comes to water safety, the best time to start swim lessons is now! Why? Because swimming is about more than summer fun—it’s a life skill that keeps children safe and builds confidence. Summer comes and goes, but water safety is year-round!

1. Your child can hold their head up without help. At four months, children are rapidly progressing. They should show a natural reflex to kick, grasp items, follow movement with their eyes, and hold their breath when you pour bathwater on their head. These are all ideal traits that will help them learn how to find air and grab the pool’s edge.

2. Your child is curious about water. This usually starts around the toddler years, when your child develops mobility and a special interest in their surroundings. Neighborhood ponds, backyard pools, buckets of water and even bathtubs suddenly become fascinating.

3. Your child hasn’t had formal swim instruction. According to the National Institutes of Health, participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in children ages 1-4.

4. Your child is limited at social activities involving water. They avoid the deep end, depend on floaties and require your assistance at pool parties and water parks.

5. You stopped swim lessons, but your child isn’t yet a safe, confident swimmer. Consistency is key when mastering critical water safety skills.

6. You want peace of mind around the water. The CDC reports that drowning is the #1 cause of death in children under 4. Swim lessons are a proactive step to keep your child safe.

At Aqua-Tots Swim School Sarasota, our year-round lessons help children progress through the proven Aqua-Tots curriculum, laying the foundation for a lifetime of safe and confident swimming.
