Alton Brown was directing TV commercials when he got the crazy idea to go to culinary school and reinvent the cooking show. The result was “Good Eats,” an irreverent, science-forward program that kept Brown gainfully employed for over twenty years.
Along the way, he also hosted iconic programs like “Iron Chef America,” “Food Network Star,” and “Cutthroat Kitchen.” Brown’s live culinary variety shows have toured to sold-out crowds across the country since 2013. Now, he is bringing his new tour, “Alton Brown Live: Last Bite,” to Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Sunday, February 16.
When asked what he wants audiences to get from this show, Brown said, “Above all, I want them to be entertained, to enjoy a couple hours of live theatre. But, about two, maybe three days later, I want them to slowly realize they actually learned something…something they’re glad to know.”
In “Alton Brown Live: Last Bite,” the famed foodist reflects on his decades in food media, presents several of his favorite culinary mega-hacks, sings some of his funny food songs, and in general, offers a culinary variety show the likes of which human eyes have never seen. Audience members of all ages will enjoy this show as Brown brings the audience into the action, focusing on the science of cooking.
“Honestly, the whole ‘science-thing’ came out of the fact that when I got to culinary school, I quickly discovered that I didn’t have any natural talent for cooking,” Brown shared. “But, I did discover that if I learned some of the science involved, what an egg needs, what does acidity do in baking, etc., that I could become a better cook, if not a great one.”
Brown shares this show is “fun for the whole family” and the staff at the Van Wezel agrees. Public Relations Director Muffy Lavens shared, “This is not a sit and watch type of show. Alton Brown gets the audience involved in such an exciting way. Many patrons have shared how much fun they had at his previous Van Wezel shows, and they can’t wait to see him again this year. It’s the perfect show for all ages.”
“Alton Brown Live: Last Bite” plays the Van Wezel on Sunday, February 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at VanWezel.org or by calling the Box Office at 941-263-6799.
