National Water Safety Month: Layers of Swim Safety

By Lindsay Leary May 2, 2023

May is National Water Safety Month! Our goal at Aqua-Tots always, but particularly during the month of May, is to create awareness around water safety, drowning prevention, and stress the importance of swim lessons to families in our community.

Water safety comes in layers. Some of the best family memories are made around water. We encourage families to commit to the five layers of water safety, so these adventures are safer for the entire family.

Children are curious and need adult supervision at all times around water. Always designate a responsible water watcher to keep an eye on swimmers.

Knowing how to find air and swim to the pool’s edge can save a child’s life. Swim lessons are the best way for caregivers to help children adapt to the water, learn safe boundaries and become safe and confident swimmers.

Pools should have a four-foot fence and a gate that locks. Inside the house, keep bathroom doors closed. Toilet lids latched and buckets of water empty.

Life jackets, when approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, should be worn appropriately around open water, such as lakes and oceans. Always remember that floaties, tubes, and inflatable rings are toys, not life-saving devices.

Caregivers of all ages should be CPR certified and trained in first aid. Also, keep a phone close by in case of an emergency when swimming.
